Ethics in Today’s Troubled Business Environment

In today’s tough business climate drumming up more business is vital to everyone’s survival. The question which every manager has to answer is how far I would be willing to go in their efforts to get the contract. Would I be willing to sell my soul for the deal or are there limits, boundaries which no matter what, I would not be willing to cross, the fundamental ethics by which I and my company live and work by. Business ethics is the behaviour that a business adheres to in its daily dealings with the world. Business ethics is critical during times of fundamental change - times much like those faced now by businesses, both non-profit and for-profit. In times of fundamental change, values that were previously taken for granted, are now strongly questioned. Many of these values are no longer followed. Consequently, there is no clear moral compass to guide leaders through complex dilemmas about what is right or wrong. Attention to ethics in the workplace conditions leaders and staff to how they should act.

    Who sets the limits?
Nearly every day news appears that company so and so was caught indulging in unethical activities while going after more business. Often after being caught they are fined and in some instances someone goes to gaol. The question of who sets the boundaries can be answered very easily, the law of the land, statuary requirements or conventions. Since these are laws, breaking them often means a fine or more. Very often in the pursuit of more business, managers are blinded by the possibility of large returns and thus they break or bend the law.

    Everybody does it
It often seems that the only way to survive is to join in with whatever is the excepted practice especially if your competitors are doing it. This is an example of trying to justify the unjustifiable. The laws are clear, there are limits to what you can and cannot do in the pursuit of more business and if, you have to violate a law in order to get a contract then, you had better be prepared to pay the price. Good business ethics should be a part of every business. The problem is that the amount of money these companies are making often outweighs the fines applied. Billion dollar profits blind the managers on their lack of business ethics, and in the end money talks.

How to maintain and develop business ethics
Your customers can sense just what type of company you are. The lack of any clear mandate regarding business ethics will be manifested in the behaviour of your staff in their interaction with the customers. The way is to develop a set of ethical standards, code of conduct for your company and provide training and guidance to all of your staff to help guide them through the confusing morass that is business ethics. By doing this your customers would notice and you would develop more business.
