At Von Ahnen Design & PR we noticed up front that our Social Media management worked really well with integrating conventional PR... from there we were able to form an alliance with local producers to help with video creation.... now we are moving on to become a "Vendor" for a local TV station - sharing talents.

I am interested in knowing how you improve your presence, penetration in the market, and grow your Social Media business past a hobby. I say this because I see A LOT OF HOBBYISTS PRETENDING TO BE PROS online. I am curious on how you differentiate yourself.

I agree with you there are many out there pretending to be experts when they are just people trying to make a fast buck. I build a lot of websites and know quite a bit about SEO and even I miss things quite often so I have a "Professional" run a complete report for me and go back and make the necessary changes. He charges very little to run the report (about $5) and also does directory submissions.

Even after doing this there is much a website owner needs to do on their own. Things such as building back links, making sure their site is updated regularly and submitted on a regular basis (every 4-6 weeks).

I think what you are pointing out is there are many people getting taken for hundreds of dollars and not getting results.

That was kind of the point, but I guess I really am interested in what others interpret as their responsibility with Social Media Management. I found early on that Social Media helped the SEO and started to really push our web clients into Social Media. Now we have clients with finished sites coming to us and asking us to help on the Social side. Then I have clients that swear they will handle the Social Media and ask us to write copy for their conventional Public Relations. In a perfect world I like to :
    • Design, Publish and Host site
    • Reserve, Design and Connect Social Media
    • Consult with client on messaging (Core Ideas)
    • Manage PR and Social Media together.
    • Possibly Produce webisodes or tv content to drive their message further - again tied to Social Media.
I see a lot of people post half-heartedly to Twitter and think they have it covered.
