I created a blog to promote myself locally. It was in a very competitive industry. I didn't rely one one method to drive traffic. I do a bunch of stuff. I believe in using multiple avenues because you won't take a big hit if one avenue dries up.

Initially, I drip feed content to my blog three times per week. I created videos. I wrote mini articles on a bunch of web 2.0 sites with links back to my blog. I only used two social networking sites. I didn't want to spread myself too thin. It It's best to be active on a few than sporadic on several sites. The social networking sites that worked for me were Twitter and LinkedIn. I never got around to using Facebook for business or Google Plus. I did get some business through my personal Facebook page, but I didn't actively promote myself.
