What trends catch on to social media such as Facebook and Twitter? Personally, I feel like it's anything that can be moderately controversial, but I'm not too sure.

A trend could be anything, from a simple "pun" to a big speech that people have "taken to".

A trend is defined as "(of a topic) be the subject of many posts on a social media website within a short period of time." ; meaning that if it causes an outrage or sparks a vast discussion, then it is trending.

I hope that this helps clarify.

Thanks man. That definitely helps. So I should be taking steps from the other way around as opposed to figuring out what's trending.

Glad that my reply helped :)

I write posts on various topics, sometimes they trend and sometimes they just shrivel up and die. Try to write about something that interests you, and other people too. That tends to help!

I don't actually go for trends unless it's something related to our business category/niche or target prospects. What I would like to know as far as trends are concerned are what sort of trends will make us relevant to students or specific target markets. Keyword research may be in order as keywords are as close to trends as possible.

It's really hard to be the trend setter in my opinion. The fastest way to get yourself thrown into the mix is to piggyback on trends that have already been around, and are still relevant. Just take a look at the ALS Ice bucket challenge. Anybody who used that hash tag was instantly trending, because everyone wanted to see people's different approaches to the trend.

I think it's hard to predict if there is a type of video that necessarily have a better chance of going viral, especially since most users are quick to get sick of that type as soon as one gets popular enough. I think you just need to have a good pulse for the public interest and if you provide unique enough content then it would go viral organically.

Wouldn't you agree though that public interest changes extremely fast these days with everything being available to us. It's overwhelming to think about trying to keep up with everything.
