I read from somewhere that becoming a member and actively participating on Google plus would increase your chances of ranking high to some degree. I never got to test it out myself though even though I did join it for my site I don't know if it was joining and sharing that gave me an edge, but I think it doesn't hurt to try and sharing in the community there is already very helpful in the first place since you can get a good amount of recognition if your content is unique or interesting.
 
In just a few words, you, as the author/owner, must make yourself available. Be interactive. Be engaging. Do things different than other sites would. Be creative. Give visitors/readers a reason to come back again, to invest in everything you say and do. On the other side, make sure your writing is up to par, cream of the crop even. Uniqueness, relevance, and grammar all plays an important role.
 
I would just say link building if this question was asked a couple of years ago, but it's 2014 now. You can't keep building backlinks hoping tha your website would rank etter. It's not possible anymore. To make iot rank better, you need to take everything including Guest Blogging, Social Marketing and Article Marketing into consideration.
 
You need to have regularly updated website and blog, you need to be present on social media networks and not only present but daily active, too. Engage in conversations and discussions in different, niche-related Facebook groups and forums, comment on niche-related blogs, promote your products and service locally, on local magazine's niche-related magazines and classifieds. Your search engine optimization should be well done, too.
