Exchanging links with other websites is the free and good general advertising tactics. By link exchange a webmaster can increase the Google page rank. Google page rank helps to index a particular site or page to google search engine. When any one searches the content on google search engine with the particular keywords your site can be searchable & you get the free 1000's of visits to your site.

You can create a link page to your site for offer the link exchange. for an automated link exchange you can download a free script available at http://www.phpjunkyard.com/php-link-manager.php

I personally invite to exchange links with my site at this url http://www.needcom.in/needlinks/links.php

Hey i must inform you that such scripts are very harmful,Google DONT LIKE LINK EXCHANGE SCRIPTS!! Big penalty and your website may disappear
Automatic scripts are not acceptable in any search engines,They require manual work,Do manual submissions only!

I agree with vickroyal. Google like backlinks but mostly those that are oneway. Using such a script may result your site to get penalized and get banned from search engines. So, I propose that in case of a link exchange it is better to do it manually. It takes time, but it is far more safe.

I hate to disagree but, exchanging links with poor websites can hurt you instead of help you. I got an email this morning that was asking to exchange links. I looked at the page and all it was, 4 pages of links. This is what Google calls a "Link Farm" and they are constantly working to give sites such as this little in the way of ranking and they are often excluded from their index completely.

You must remember goggles bots spider your site and everyone else's links and text. Guilt by association may end up with your site ending up on the same blacklist(s).

For my main business I don't exchange links with anyone. On some of my other sites if i do exchange a link with someone I look at their site and make sure its in the same genre as the site I'm giving a link to. I certainly don't trust a service to exchange links with impertinent sites and clutter up my site with garbage links or to not place my link in places where it will do more harm then good.

    Just My Opinion,
    :p

(Edit) I didn't see Vick's post. It would have saved some time. I could've just said "What Vick said"!

Just adding to the sentiment of Vick & Website Magick; I once received an e-mail trying to sell me monthly 'subscriptions' to 'backlinks'. I checked the Alexa ranking of the examples given(I think there were three, or four), and the most expensive one(about$2,500 a month!) had the worst ranking(around 3,000,000!!!)- Buyer beware. I think it is better to manually create backlinks based on your own research; also, more economical, in my opinion.

Lastly i may like to add few words for newbies -Just like you take your food three times a day-Just submit your website manually to FREE DIRECTORIES NO MATTER WHATEVER REPUTATION WHATEVER RANK its one way link so no harm-Three times a day-It is just 5 minutes work for 3 times and in the end you have 3 links SUBMITTED- Suppose you submit 45 times in a month-then in month end you will see 5 of those directories have accepted your links-Do this for three months -easy work no???? then see the results!!!

Hey Website Magick! Thank you for the very informative post.. I do have a question regarding this though. Let's say our main website is filled with content, but we have a page for "sponsored companies", which is essentially an intricate "link farm". In other words, one page which lists the companies we worked with, and links to their pages?

A response to the OP was that link exchange was preferrable for 1 way links. If our method will not be a link exchange script, but 2 way, will this still be beneficial?

If the links that you exchange are pertinent to what you do I don't think it's a concern. Those who are exchanging links for the sake of getting and giving back links are considered link farms. If you pay a service for back links you have no idea where those links are coming from and if the sites related to your sites theme or content.

So as others have said if you want to exchange links you should do it manually so you can use discretion as to who you are linking with.

Exchanging links is a great way of improving the PR of your website. But you must make sure that the website, with which you are exchanging links, is relevant to your website..

Link exchange is a great strategy, only if you do it manually. Saves you the trouble of getting banned by search engines. Just invest some time and effort researching quality and relevant sites that you can exchange links with and you are off to a good start.
