Sitemaps are basically not required but sitemap definitely helps Google crawlers to understand your website structure.

A site map (or sitemap) is a list of pages of a web site accessible to crawlers or users. It can be either a document in any form used as a planning tool for Web design, or a Web page that lists the pages on a website, typically organized in hierarchical fashion.

Using sitemaps has many benefits, not only easier navigation and better visibility by search engines. Sitemaps offer the opportunity to inform search engines immediately about any changes on your site. Of course, you cannot expect that search engines will rush right away to index your changed pages but certainly the changes will be indexed faster, compared to when you don't have a sitemap.

Sitemaps are used to index your web pages for crawling purpose. All search engines use .xml sitemap for crawling instead of .txt, .html

There are two types of Sitemap :
    • Sitemap.html
    • Sitemap.xml
The Sitemap.html is designed to help the users to easily can navigate the website.

Where as the Sitemap.xml is buid up for the purpose of crawling & indexing. Through Sitemap.xml file, the web crawler get all the web pages at one place only so it's easy for crawler in process of crawling & Indexing of web pages

HTML sitemap is a plain text sitemap used by browsers to know and surf through your website pages. XML sitemap is a coded sitemap used to submit in webmaster tool to help spiders crawl them and index the webpages in search engines.
