Disadvantages of Social Networking sites are:

*Lack of Anonymity - You are putting out information about your name, location, age, gender, and many other types of information that you may not want to let others know.

    *Scams and Harassment

*Time Consuming - These sites unnecessarily waste our valuable time, when user spend time on these sites and get addicted. It affects children and youngster's studies. As they spend their valuable time on these sites and loss their studies and concentration.

*Addictions of these sites can even affect our mental conditions, sometime is became a big reason of depression and tension.

    I agree to an extent,

I run a business. I do not have time to spend hours a day making "friends" on FB. I don't use FaceBook at all. I have a pinterst account and linkedin account. I find linkedin to be spammy.

On the other hand. I have a client who sells original art online. FB has been a great medium for her. Her sales come largely from people she becomes friends with. My business on the other hand is a bit more industrial.

There is a difference between having a personal FB account and a business account. No I don't want to put my personal life out there. I do want to promote my business and making my business public is a good thing.

Thanks for the post. Its a topic worth discussing.

    :)

Facebook can be very addicting, and it can create social stress too, since Facebook usually shows the good life of people, and sometimes we may feel unlucky.

Everything that you are utilizing/abusing too much is harmful. Same goes with social networking sites.

Social networking sites are good as long as your not going to used it to harm other people and harm yourself. To much time in this sites can sometimes lead to health problems. It can also post threat to your online privacy. So be careful in using these sites.

Social Networking sites are very useful if used correctly. Facebook can be really useful for keeping up with friends and family as well as world news but you shouldn't be spending more than a few minutes per day on it. It's like everything else. Moderation is the key. Without social networking you're kind of at a loss because you won't keep up with things as well. Get obsessed over it and you're wasting valuable time. And there's no need to over-react when it comes to privacy. Just keep your really personal info off your facebook, twitter, etc. and properly adjust your privacy settings and you should be fine. Some people seem to think that if they give their full name on their facebook their bank account will be hacked tomorrow.

The disadvantages set out in the opening post apply to people using them for social networking. It is different for those of us who use them mainly for business networking and Internet marketing.

When you have something to promote you do not have the same mindset about trolling or lack of privacy. Social media marketing can take up a lot of time, but a busy business person will use software to set a schedule for automatic posting of messages and sharing links.

I can appreciate what you are saying Tutormandomz1, but I believe your afore mention post is a highly circumstantial situation, dependent upon the actions of an individual. Ultimately, anyone can control what he or she puts on a social media site. If there is any concern about any information being made public, there is no obligation to add it. I have a personal site and the only "personal" info I share is my name. Nobody needs to know anything more. If concern is higher, only allow your profile to be accessible to those you know.

Unfortunately, we live in a time where scams and harassment is very versatile. I don't think scams on social media sites compare to the daily emails, phone calls, bank hacks, etc. that are endured too frequently. Harassment online, although it does happen and should not be tolerated, is hardly reciprocal to the bullying that is slowly, but surely infiltrating public schools around the world. With that said, if you don't want to witness it, indirectly be a part of it or have to be a direct recipient of it, don't join or sign up with a site.

Then, the issue of it being time consuming is somewhat, in my opinion, irrelevant. I know many people, including myself, that use social media for business, which it does require time. To me, that's not a problem. However, if you are specifically speaking about those who "voluntarily" spend hours on end on Facebook, Twitter, etc. watching every post or tweet, I would question health and stability from the start. Honestly, I have never heard of anyone being "addicted" to a social media site, but I would assume that the average person has more important things (I.e. paying bills, eating, sleeping, living life in general) to delegate time to.

With all that being said, I honestly do not see any true disadvantage from the standpoint of the user. When it comes to social media, in my opinion, there are individuals that use the opportunity and those that misuse the privilege, which is unfortunate when others are involved. Overall, the good that comes out definitely outweighs and out shines any miniscule risk that could be created by another or one that inevitably could be controlled by that individual. .

There are some harmful disadvantages with social networking. Well just because there are cons with just using the Internet. There are always scams out there. People are always phishing and trying to steal your information. You have to be more aware of what your doing on the Internet.

I'm not so concerned with some of the disadvantages you mentioned except for the scams and harassment part. Issues on addiction, anonymity and time consumption can be resolved by the users themselves. As for scams and harassment, those are deeds initiated by evil people who take advantage of social media to leech off, threaten or deliberately harm people.
