How does Google+ work?

I have seen Google+ everywhere lately, so I created a profile (using my Google account), but I honestly don't understand what it's good for?

How does it work? Can you add people like Facebook?

Basically yes,

Google + is Googles answer to FaceBook (not their first as they've tried to break into the social networking market several times). It's by invitation so you need to send invites and receive them to connect with others.
