If you don't spam... then there are some benefits:
- you can get a backlink from a blog on a related niche
- you may get traffic, because people also read comments
- you make friends
- you may participate in some interesting discutions
- doing it the right way you can become some kind of expert in your niche, at least you have a chance that someone read your opinion.

Because I fight against spam, I started to design a tool that will help people create unique messages for blog comments and forum posts. I know this sound weird for some, but we all fight with the weapons we like most.

 

Blog commenting is a great way to get backlinks, it is a bit tricky though.
Most people believe that blog commenting is only about finding a blog and post any comment with a link on it.
That is wrong...
The correct way is to find a relevant blog and post a comment that has something to add to the discussion. Personally comments like "Great post", I flag them as spam, because their only purpose is a backlink creation.
Blogging is about creating a community, so when it is correct done it can really help your online business get grow.

I thought you said it well. It is about growing a community and not allowing anyone to post on your blog. I realized that when my site went to a PR2....Tons of comments started coming in to collect their links.
