Mistakes People Make In Writing Their Headlines

    I tend to take a lot of time deciding how to word a headline. I do this because I know that 8 out of 10 people who read a headline will not bther to read the rest of what is on the page. A headline should entice someone to read on or click a link. Mistakes in headlines put people off viewing what else is in an ad, an article, a video, blog post, social media share etc.

    A headline should not be too clever, catchy or cute. It must be clear what the content is about.

    It should not contain any fancy words, business jargon or abbreviation that might not be easily understood. A headline should be written in plain language

    It should not be too lengthy or too short.

    It should not be misleading or over-hyped.

    Do you find it difficult to come up with an effective headline? Or do you have you any tips on how to develop good headline writing skills?

    I know it's still a really trendy thing to do, but I am completely burned out on Upworthy-esque article titles, that are shameless click-bait. It's gotten so bad, people have actually made parody sites which can generate Upworthy style headlines on the fly, such as this site:

    I hope we've peaked with these and that it's all downhill from here to the point where sites stop using these. To me it just screams cheap attention grabber, and I become apprehensive that the site it's trying to direct me to is just some low quality site littered with ads.

    I do think it's somewhat still important to include the keywords you are targeting in the headline if possible, and another trick is to capitalize the first letter of every word of in the headline (with the exception of known brand names which purposefully use upper or lower case, like "iPhone" or "GEICO"). Doing these two things increases your click through rate. I've seen this boost click through rate on my PPC ads nearly every single time I employ them. When the words from the user's search query are in your SERP title, they get bolded which makes your link stand out and appear more relevant. And when you capitalize the first letter of each word, this too makes your SERP title/link look more prominent and stronger on the page.

    Headlines are not easy for me to write at this time. I am just learning to do good copywriting and headlines. I am not a strong writer so this is going to hurt.

    I make my headlines by asking myself what I may would click on. So if I get a catchy title that makes me believe that I would click on it myself, it usually also works for other people.

    I definitely agree that headlining is super important. I get frustrated when I follow a link to an article in which the headline depicts one image, but then upon viewing the actual site or article, it contains totally different information. I always try to make the headline about an 8 word summary of the article. I want people to know exactly what my article entails, but without any added "fluff" as my English teacher in high school would say.

    I have to admit, another pet peeve of mine is when people add keywords into their title for more traffic, when the keywords have little prevalence in the article. I know that it's important to generate more traffic onto the site in order to get more hits, especially if you're using AdSense or a program of that nature, but using a keyword that is basically irrelevant to the article at hand is really just misleading.

    I grew tired of the sensationalized "It will blow your mind" kind of headline. Burned out too! Instead of being enticed to click on those kinds of headlines, I rather shy away from them.

    For me, I need to make a proper balance between the factors of a headline. For now, I rely on my gut to tell me if a headline will do well. Though, I stray towards the "deep" kind of headline, which make people think a bit...which can be both a good or bad thing.

    My SOP now is to have a working title first. After I am done, I review if the working title stays or is saved in my ideas bin. Then I mull over the new possible title of the work or article I just finished.

    There are some things that I consider important for a headline :
    -Don't mislead (people will maybe click once on a misleading title but no second time...)
    -Be catchy, sound good
    -Get the readers interest
    -Say what the article is about

    As long as these criteria are met, I think that my headline will do fine

    These are indeed good pointers, especially for those who really want to capture their audience. I think as it comes down to it, don't oversell. Overselling the headline could kill the vibe of the reader to actually check it out.

    One person that I have then reading says the headline should get the readers attention. Then tell them what you want to tell them so that the reader can decide if they care about the subject enough to keep reading.

    I can't believe it's taken until post 11 for someone to say this but...

    Please make sure your headline is spelt correctly and properly punctuated! Your headline is basically advertising blurb for your article and nothing looks worse than one which is grammatically incorrect. It suggests that the writer hasn't bothered to check things and immediately puts you off reading any further.

    I like a headline that is something I would be interested in. I write my headlines like that. It should be something that gets my attention and relates to me. It should be short, sweet and to the point.

    It is like with the readers hook that they teach you about in school when doing term papers. That is the main part with your paper along with your thesis.
