I would suggest, you keep on updating your website with fresh content. Content always plays major role, where you can be on top in SERPs, only with unique content. Building backlinks, keyword stuffing always hurt your website SEO.

As marketers, helping search engines answer that basic question is one of our most important tasks. Search engines can't read pages like humans can, so we incorporate structure and clues as to what our content means. This helps provide the relevance element of search engine optimization that matches queries to useful results.

Understanding the techniques used to capture this meaning helps to provide better signals as to what our content relates to, and ultimately helps it to rank higher in search results. This post explores a series of on-page techniques that not only build upon one another, but can be combined in sophisticated ways.

While Google doesn't reveal the exact details of its algorithm, over the years we've collected evidence from interviews, research papers, US patent filings and observations from hundreds of search marketers to be able to explore these processes. Special thanks to Bill Slawski, whose posts on SEO By the Sea led to much of the research for this work.

As you read, keep in mind these are only some of the ways in which Google could determine on-page relevancy, and they aren't absolute law! Experimenting on your own is always the best policy.

We'll start with the simple, and move to the more advanced.

    1. Keyword Usage
    2. TF-IDF
    3. Synonyms and Close Variants
    4. Page Segmentation
    5. Semantic Distance and Term Relationships
    6. Co-occurrence and Phrase-Based Indexing
    7. Entity Salience

If you build too many backlinks in short period of time, and stuffing keywords in content while sharing the information in other websites would definitely hurt your SEO. If you build a backlink, it should be relevant to the topic also useful to the user.

This is fairly accurate. Google has become much smarter over the last few years and will have an idea as to what's natural and what's fake. It doesn't look natural to have hundreds of links built overnight on a brand new site, unless it's gone viral.

I completely agree that it is so important to avoid keyword stuffing- it really screws with your saturation and will really hurt your rankings.

    - Reduce the page load times throughout your website. Over time, as you add more and more plugins, tracking codes, widgets and what not to your site, it can become pretty bogged down and your page load times can really suffer. You can try running pages of your site through services such as Pingdom Tools to get a sense of how long they are taking to load. If it's anything more than, say 3 seconds, you should run additional tests to see what is slowing load times down.

    - Your internal linking structure is also important since it affects how the link juice is distributed throughout your site. Generally speaking, it's a good idea to have links to related articles or content below or beside your main content on a page, so if a user is interested, they can continue reading further and increase the average times spent on your site. In addition, search engine spiders will carry the link juice from that page to the related pages that are linked as well. If you've got a site with hundreds of pages, but only a handful are ranking well and driving the lions share of the total traffic to your site, a proper internal linking structure may help resolve some of this, and give a boost to lesser visited pages, which may also in turn start ranking higher over time. There are even Wordpress plugins which can auto generate links in your content to other pages of your site - though I would use these carefully so as not to make your site look too spammy.

    - Mobile friendly design, aka "responsive design" is also crucial as a growing number of total traffic these days is coming from mobile devices. Google has ways of evaluating if your site is mobile friendly or not, but even beyond that, if the user experience on mobile devices is poor, the visitors to your site using them will simply bounce and not waste their time.

Include your keywords in the first 2 lines on the content pages. That is the best tip in onpage SEO.

This! Also remember to include your keywords in b/i/u tags. Sometimes it helps other search engines to find proper keywords at your site. Meta descriptions and keywords aren't used by Google, but they are used by other search engines like Bing!, Yandex, etc. ;)
