Now a days when everyone understands that affiliate links ends with some name or the url is not as it should be,Do you use a url shortner??I use one nice url shortner script ,it hides completely affiliate link,I dont trust anyother url tiny script because they look into the logs, where as these people dont bother about logs, and they declare a very nice privacy policy so i am impressed--

It depends on the amount of traffic I expect the link to get. For high traffic links I set up a free .tk domain from http://my.dot.tk but for lower traffic URL's I will cloak one through one of my websites. I use .tk mainly not to use up to much CPU.

I would never use any of the free ones anymore as people have grown used to them and plus they will not contain your exact keywords.

I don't think I've ever seen a .tk domain extension show up in a search.

Now you will not get any search engine traffic to such a domain, I only use them to cloak affiliate links. Why burn my servers when I use theirs for free?

I have used tiny URL and even used the preview.tinyurl.com/KEYWORDS version offered by Tiny URL. I do not prefer to use the review.tinyurl due to the fact it will redirect back to the Tiny URL page for the person who clicks the link to verify first. Just send the traffic directly to the site you made the Tiny URL for.

Bitly is another good one to use too. Google has a url shortner http://goo.gl/ which I have tried and found is quite effective in my opinion.

    Ok,

Here's my take on this conversation. I have several sites that have affiliate links on them. There's no need for a URL shortner as the people who click on them know what they are clicking on (an advertisement) and want to look at the product.

So unless I'm using the URL shortener so i can post it where people will think I own the site (spam) or this is my business when you are hoping to cash in on a click (Spam) I don't see the need for it.

If you want to make money with affiliate ads build a site and do the work to get the traffic. If you use a URL shortener to spam (forums and message boards) you probably are not going to be very successful anyway.

    ???

    Website Magick,

I do agree with you I don't use them except to post on twitter and even then it is with bitly. I learned my lesson using url shortner , though it would be a quick thing but you are right....just put in the work.

I use bitly as well for twitter and I do have a cloaking software as the aim was to keep all my links tidy and in one place for me (which I've not yet got around to doing). But, Website Magick, you are right there, the net is one big affiliate link, it's a matter of who the buy wishes to give the commission to.

    My two cents. ;)

    Hi Julie,

The trouble is too many people get taken in by scam sites like just got paid and the JSS tripler and they use those links to spam every board that will allow it (and never make money). Or they sign for an affiliate program and are to lazy or stupid to set up a website and get traffic so they use URL shortners to disguise their affiliate links so they can spam the boards and social networks.

Hopefully we can educate a few people so they don't get ripped off and waste a lot of hours of their time. Or mine as I have to delete all that spam lol

But isn't it hard to hide those URL shortners. I know when I see tiny URL....it's an automatic indicator. I could be wrong or way off base but that is just how I look at it.

How much spam do you delete Magick? I'm sure it is hard to keep up with.

   ,
I'd estimate 20 posts a day (on a slow day) sometimes more. I also move a lot of posts to their proper forum rather then delete them and investigate quite a few sites to make sure that they actually belong to the people promoting them.

And FYI, I'm just a volunteer here. While doing all this neat stuff I run my business.

    Thanks for asking though. :)
