Shared web hosting

what do you think about Shared web hosting service ?

 

One's website is placed on the same server as many other sites, ranging from a few to hundreds or thousands. Typically, all domains may share a common pool of server resources, such as RAM and the CPU. The features available with this type of service can be quite extensive. A shared website may be hosted with a reseller.

 

Shared webhosting is fine for most websites not to mention most typical and the sites run just fine. The only time you need you need a dedicated server is if you have a site that has 100's or even 1000's of users one the site at one time. Shared hosting costs anywhere from a couple of dollars to ten or twenty dollars per month where as dedicated servers can run One hundred dollars and up.
Most people just starting out can't afford a dedicated server but the alternative is a VPS (virtual private server) which is cheaper and can run much like a dedicated server although it is still on a server with other sites. You will have more resources for your site(s) with a VPS.

I prefer going the VPS route. But this is more advantageous if you own a network of sites. With VPS, I feel more in control over the server

Although people who have 1 website should be fine with a shared hosting account which should be a little cheaper and easier for them to manage.

Not really as you never know what other sites are sharing the server. There could be forums and ecommerce sites along with Wordpress blogs and porn lol. No worries though as they have no effect on each other whatsoever.

 

I would recommend going with a VPS over shared hosting 100% of the time. A VPS offers you more security and reliability compared to a shared hosting account. As stated above when you are on a shared hosting setup, you are doing just that... sharing everything with all the other sites loaded to the server. One site takes off and is using all the RAM or CPU and every site on the machine is affected. Your site slows to a point it could stop responding. One site "could" get hacked and allow access for a hacker to take the server offline among other damaging things. Thus again affecting your site.

A VPS although technically is still on a server with other VPS accounts. They all run seperately from each other. You have your own Dedicated resources (CPU, RAM, Disk space) so nobody else is going to use them or cause you problems if they are using all of theirs. This setup puts you in full control of your site/s without the potential of harm from other sites which you don't control. The price on VPS servers has come down lately and is more then affordable for even John Doe wanting to get a single website online. You do not have be computer techy to run a VPS either. You will select a managed VPS plan or an unmanaged VPS plan. If you go managed the hosting company will handle all things server. You just focus on your site and traffic. The host will keep the server updated, running, etc. If you want to handle all that yourself, then just go for an unmanaged plan. They will give you server and you do everything from setting it up to running your sites.

Again just my two cents and over 15 years in the hosting biz. We started offering just shared back in 1996 and dropped that for only VPS and Dedicated servers as quick as we could Shared hosting is just not worth the hassle as a host or as a client.

 

I've found Shared hosting is fine for most applications although there are a lot of companies these days who are overselling at a dollar or two so they have to cram so many sites on a server that they throttle it. At those prices they have to have hundreds of accounts per server just to break even. Then of course the people who buy $1 hosting thinking they got a great deal find their sites either running extremely slow or being offline on a daily or weekly basis which I find inexcusable.
Again you get what you pay for if its a dollar a month shared account or a $5 a month VPS (which I see out there a lot these days) you're probably going to have problems.

 

What about a reseller account?I know less about these differences! where i have a reseller account

Different companies handle reseller accounts differently and quite often resellers are selling reseller accounts and those companies are also selling reseller accounts. Basically it means they rent server space from a different company that owns the data center. This isn't always a bad thing and even HostGator rents servers from softlayer.
Generally speaking though a reseller account is quite often just a just a VPS that the reseller then partitions out to other customers. The reseller is then responsible for sales, customer service, billing etc.

 

Hello thats a nice piece of Information Now i have one more very technical question and i am sure that i have not found thereply to this question on all internet till date--I have searched everywhere but i did not get my answer--so here is one question for you (other people must not reply to this question unless he or she does not holds a hosting company like website magick)

I know i i buy a domain from a reseller then there is always a risk if you are not in good terms with Reseller,then he can create problems when you need to transfer your domain,he will definately block your epp key in order to get payment everyyear and not to loose the client,So my question is,-----If a reseller is not honest and he dont want to give epp key,then what are the best steps???
Further i need to know ----if I have a EPP KEY for my domain which i have taken before dispute with Reseller then Can he change the epp key??????or Can he stop the transfer???? Can he change the epp key ??? though he is not a registrar he is just a reseller!

No Problem Vick,
Some hold the opinion that you should keep your domain name and hosting with different companies, this way you never run into this problem. Even if you buy a domain from a reseller technically "they" are your registrar. All payments go through them just as if you buy hosting from a reseller they are your host and the people that own the Data center will generally not get involved in disputes (so keep local backups ). As far as the EPP Key to change registrars I would say "No" he cannot change it as it is generated from the registrar and not the reseller although if you do not use the key with a certain amount of time a new one may need to be generated. If you have the EPP Key you should be able to transfer to a new Registrar and there is nothing the reseller can do to stop it.
If you have a company that is holding your domain hostage you can file a complaint. When buying a domain be sure that the info in whois is in your name and not the resellers and make sure you save the receipts or CC invoices so you can prove that you paid for it. That in itself is key to winning the dispute.

Now the validity part,I have read that .com does not expires its epp keys unless registrar does not changes it himself!
I see and just checked that all epp keys are same as it were 1 year back,Though in my case i have no dispute with my reseller ,but you never know so i would like to know about the Validity of these epp keys,I have all my epp keys in my external hd and i have no disputes with my reseller,but to be on the safe side i need to know-The validity part!!

I have tried many online hosting options as I like to design and promote sites, but am not interested in network maintenance. Over the years, the one that I have grown to depend on is Bluehost - I enjoy the simplicity of the Control Panel, the options in Simple Scripts and the idea that I can hold as many URL's and Email accounts as I need to without extra charges. That's important to me because as I promote a site, I may create purpose driven email accounts to track what's working or not.... I have found other hosts will restrict the number of available email addresses.

As a service provider, Bluehost also pays an affiliate commission when I recommend them as a Host to a client... that works well and keeps things nicely separated for the client.

I've seen good reviews for Bluehost. Hostgator also has a good affiliates program and pays $50 per referral. cPanel has almost become an industry standard and I know of few hosts who do not offer unlimited email accounts.

Another GoDaddy Reseller. While Godaddy is a good registrar for domain names their hosting has very poor reviews and their control panel is the worst. All of these Godaddy template resellers share their control panel.
