    Hi everyone...................................
The important item you should be aware of is the effect of redirect pages on your search engine rankings.
The type of redirect that you use can affect how your site is treated by a search engine. One type of redirect page is permanent, and another is temporary. The one you decide to use has serious implications for your site ranking. It is very important that you understand that a search engine crawler reads a redirect according to the number that it is given. Let’s say, although 301 and 302 redirects do the same thing, the codes are different, which tells the search engine crawler that one means the page no longer exists and the other means the page is only temporarily not being used. Each redirect number should be used under different circumstances.

There are two types of redirects permanent and temporary . If you are using temporary redirect the SEO done for the page wont be useful for the page where the redirect is pointing . If you are using permanent redirect some SEO done for the page you are applying redirect is useful for the new page . Redirects are used when a page is either under maintenance or has been deleted from the website . Redirects must be used smartly . If temporary redirect is used make sure the maintenance of that page happens asap.

Redirect is used when page is under maintenance or not found. There are two types of redirects one is permanent and other is temporary. Permanent redirect is used when the page you are applying is useful for the new page. And temporary redirect is used when page is under maintenance.

First, as to your last sentence, I am assuming you are redirecting 20 urls that are "not optimal" to 20 new urls that are optimized. Such that your example above is one and another would be http://www.dog.com/food to http://www.dog.com/organic-raw-dog-food, etc. for approximately 20 urls.

If these follow the best practices (301's url to url in the .htaccess file) you should have no issue with the change. Understand that if the "poor" url /toys is ranking number 8 on page 1 of Google, and you do the redirect, it does not mean that you will rank for /chew-toys in the same place. For a short while you will likely continue to rank and then likely will fall off quickly.

Your new page will gain the link juice but not the ranking of the old.

We do a lot of site redesigns to bring them to SEO and CRO standards and therefore use a lot of 301's to maintain PA and grow it. We typically see the juice move over two to three months or more in a gradual fashion. An example is a site that we transferred every url for in late Aug. had about 170 links to its home page. Two months later, when looking at the old url there were only a couple showing and the links were showing on the new. So, it will change but not overnight
